Vasota, due to its remote site has very little history. The three British officers who helped Siddi Johar during Panhala war were held as prisoners here. During the war against Aurangzeb when he captured Sajjangad, the idols of gods owned by Samartha Ramdas were kept on Vasota. In the Peshwa times the fort was controlled by Tai Telin, from Pratinidhi side. Bapu Gokhale won it from her by firing guns from old Vasota.
Vasota fort is situated on the banks of the Shivsagar dam. Met Indavali is the base village of Vasota. From here the forest path leads us to the top of Vasota. It takes two hours to reach the top. It is a gradual climb and through dense forest. It is an ideal trek in winter and summer. During rainy season lots of leaches are found and so it is not recommended to visit here. In Bamnoli we can stay in temple or school. Forest department has started residential facility at Met Indavali in the tents.
Stone carved steps take us to the top of Vasota. Because of thick vegetation and negligence, all constructions on the fort are in a bad condition. There is are remains of a Hanuman temple, residential constructions, a Mahadev temple in good condition, two water tanks side by side, an old cement track (Chunyacha Ghana), shielding walls and bastions. From extreme southern point of the fort the adjacent hill called old Vasota is visible. It has a cliff falling is Konkan called Babukada. It is third highest kada or cliff in Maharashtra. On the topmost point there is a small plain space. On the northern side of the fort there is the temple of Mahadev called Kalkai thane. From here a slender projection of mountain extends which is fortified. It is the only machi on the fort
The view from top is breath-taking. The fort is covered by a thick forest, which is a reserved forest. On the east side are the backwaters of Shivsagar dam. After that one can see the mountain range of Kas Mahabaleshwar. Steep falls or cliffs on the west side of the fort and the mountain ranges add to the beauty of the place. Nageshwar cave is visible on the north of the fort. It is a two hours trek form Vasota
