DAY 0: ARRIVE AT JAMMU RAILWAY STATION, DRIVE TO SRINAGAR, NIGHT STAY AT SRINAGAR (HOUSEBOAT)

DAY 1: SHIKARA RIDE & VISIT SHANKARACHARYA TEMPLE, DRIVE SRINAGAR TO SONAMARG 

DAY 2: TREK SONAMARG TO NICHNAI VIA SHEKDUR, 6 HRS - 9 KM. 11,500 FT / 3,485 M

DAY 3: TREK NICHNAI TO VISHNUSAR LAKE, 6 HRS - 12 KM. 12,243 FT / 3710 M

DAY 4: EXPLORE VISHNUSAR & KISHANSAR TWIN LAKES

DAY 5: TREK VISHANSAR LAKE TO GADSAR LAKE, 5 HRS - 10 KM. 11,880 FT / 3600 M

     The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is in no need of an introductory treatise. It presents the proem in itself. You can draw a preface of it by just hearing its name. Kashmir is a wonderful place and if you are on a himalayan trek you are bound to taste the natural beauty and adventure. The trek to the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek offers a lifetime experience of vintage memories that are so wonderfully tiring. The thundering silence of the Kashmir lakes and its virgin beauty is spell bound. Apart from the lakes, even the barren milky snow clad mountains stand out in might and proud.

     The location of this trek, as obvious, is Kashmir, also known as the paradise of the earth. The trek duration calculates around 7-9 days and this trek is often graded as moderate in regards to the trekking challenges. The elevation circles around 13000 feet and the distance paths approximately 63 kms. On such a fulfilling trek you will learn so much learn about yourself- in a trifecta – physically, mentally and emotionally. For a trekker, nothing can replace and prepare him for those paramount and conflicting emotions that whether his body will take so much of strain and whether he will make it or not. But the joy on reaching the destination is obvious. This trek will always be happy and a cherishing trek for the trekkers that comes in handy with a few preparations.

     As the trek to the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek demands physical fitness, you must take good care of your health, shape yourself well and be fit and fine. Trekkers can train themselves by working out regularly in gym along with running, walking on incline, cycling, cross-training and stretching on a daily basis. Along with physical health mental fitness is important equally.

Trek Itinerary :-

 

Thursday 21 july Day 00

(Jammu to Srinagar)

- Arrival at Jammu Railway Station at 02.40 pm (Swaraj Express)

- Start Journey from Jammu to Srinagar by J&K state transport (290 kms / 8-9 hours)

- Overnight at Srinagar (houseboat)

 

Friday 22 July Day 01

(Srinagar to Sonamarg)

- Wake up early as it helps in Acclimatization

- Shikara ride

- Visit Shankaracharya Temple

- Trekगुरु will arrange for the pick up from Srinagar TRC at 2 pm. Drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg, which is 4 hours away

- If you are coming on your own to the campsite, you are expected to report to the Sonamarg base camp by 5 pm.

 

Saturday 23 July Day 2

(Sonamarg to Nichnai via Shekdur)

- The trek to Nichnai covers a distance of 9 km.

- 3 km into the trek, you will spot alone dhabha. Pick up your stock of short eats from here.

- It is a total 3 hour ascent followed by 1 hour descent and finally a gentle 2 hour ascent to Nichnai which is at 11,500 feet.

- The trail takes you through meadows, dense forests with Maple, Pine and Bhoj trees. 

- You will reach Nichnai in about 6 hours.

- Camp overnight at Nichnai.

 

Sunday 24 July Day 3

(Nichnai to Vishnusar lake)

- The days trek is a long 12 km walk on meadows with the scenery changing for the better all along.

- Start by 8 am to give you enough time in route to enjoy the meadows.

- Your first destination for the day is to cross the Nichnai pass or Vishnusar.

- It will take you about 6 hours to reach Vishnusar, gaining an altitude of 2000 feet.

- Pitch your tents next near a water source.

- Camp for the night at Vishnusar.

 

Monday 25 July Day 4

(Explore Vishnusar and Kishansar twin lakes)

- This day can be spent leisurely, exploring the twin lakes.

- These lakes are full of trouts and trout fishing is popular. Obtain a permit from Srinagar for fishing.

- The trail from Kishansar climbs up to the top of a ridge and on  the top of the ridge is the Gadsar pass.

- Spend time at the Kishansar meadows photographing the lake from various angles.

- Camp for the night at Vishnusar.

 

Tuesday 26 July Day 5

(Vishnusar to Gadsar via Kishansar lake and Gadsar Pass)

- Start trekking towards the top of the ridge from Kishansar.

- The trek is a steep 2 hour ascent followed by a steep descent followed a gentle walk in the meadows. 

- It will take you from 12,000 feet to the Gadsar pass at 13,750 feet covering a distance of 10km.

- An hour into the trek, you will see the most beautiful view of the twin lakes together.

- On the other side of the Gadsar pass stretches a long valley with 2-3 small lakes.

- You can also see a few peaks outside the LOC (Line of control).

- Walk through a long strech of multi coloured flowers, till you reach Gadsar lake.

 

 

 

- You will reach the campsite in 5 hours.

- There is an army camp close by and all details of the trekkers and staff including original id cards are recorded, collected and checked here.

- Camp for the night at Gadsar/near the army camp.

 

Wednesday 27 July Day 6

(Gadsar to Satsar)

- Begin your trek towards Satsar, traversing through meadows, a ridge and a stream.

 

 

 

- The trek covers a distance of 12 km in 6 hours.

- Before you reach the first lake, you will have to report to the Satsar army check post. 

- It is the 3rd line of defence from the LOC. The same process of ID checking, collection and questioning repeats here too.

- Ten minutes out of the army camp is the first of the Satsar lakes.

- The lake is pretty big and looks picturesque in its green setting with mountains in front.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thursday 28 July Day 7

(Satsar to Gangabal twin lakes)

- You will need to cover 9 km today. It may take around 6 hours.

- The trail is mostly descending, with a few steep ascends, bringing you down from 12,000 feet to 11,500 feet.

- Trek up half an hour out of camp, to reach the biggest Satsar lake.

- The terrain is bouldery and it is more of a boulder hopping exercise than anything else.

- Look out for the Gangabal and Nandkol twin lakes – a beautiful view from the top.

- Descend further down to meadows and to the Nandakol lake, beside which is the Gangabal lake.

- Camp for the night at Gangabal.

 

Friday 29 July Day 8

(Gangabal to Naranag)

- The final descent is quite taxing, as it involves a long and steep descent, but it also passes through the most beautiful pine forests. 

- It covers a distance of 11 km, and dropping from 11,500 feet to 7,45o feet.

- The trail descends down a ridge onto a meadow with pretty little yellow flowers and then moves in and out of a pine forest until it hits the main road head of Narang.

- You will reach Narang in about 6 hours. The trek ends at Naranag.

- Naranag to Sringar

- Trekगुरु will arrange for the drop back to Sringar from Naranag.

 

 

 

- The transportation cost is additional and will have to be paid directly to the driver.

- You will reach Srinagar by 6:30 pm

Do's, Dont's & Facts:-

- Kindly carry 1 Identity proof.

- Please note that prepaid sim cards do not work in Kashmir.

- The cost of transport from Srinagar to Sonmarg and return from Narnag to Srinagar has to be borne by the participant. Trekगुरु has arrangements with local transporters to pick up trekkers from Srinagar.

- if you don’t want to carry your backpack so you can give it to porter, but you have to informe us in advance and have to pay Rs. 300/- extra per day per bag.

- If a trek is called off at the last moment due to a natural calamity or unforeseen circumstances (like rains, earthquake, landslides, bandh etc.) then you will be given full refund. If it is cancelled mid-way then partial refund will be given.

- The expenses occurring from change in schedule due to weather conditions or personal health issues are to be borne by the participants. The Himalaya Destination will not be responsible for weather as well as health issues.

- Our daily schedule during trip may differ from our usual daily life schedule with respect to day chores, tea timing, food timing etc. Please don’t complain about these petty issues.

 - On most of the days we will wake up early to travel comfortably and enjoy the serenity of morning. Early to bed, early to rise will be followed particularly on the days of trek.

- Always respect the local people and their culture. We try to learn more from them about the place.

- Please do not carry or wear any valuables, ornaments, jewellery, etc. If carried, then we Do Not take any liability for the same. 

- It is most essential to be fit and fine before heading for trekking. While planning your trekking trip, it is preferable to have a medical fitness check-up done.

- Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Trekking or any adventure activity is potentially risky. For all these events you are at your own risk.
