The Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Himalayan Club is proud to announce that they have been entrusted with the screening of The Banff Mountain Film Festival in India for the year 2015, as part of the World Tour by The Banff Centre, Canada.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is one of the flagship programs of The Banff Centre. It is one of the world’s pre-eminent mountain festivals. Climbers, filmmakers, writers, and photographers from all over the world now recognize Banff as the key event in their mountain community;… sharing stories with fellow mountaineers and armchair adventurers alike is a coveted privilege.

At the very core of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival is the Film Competition. Filmmakers enter the competition with the hope that their films might win an award and be chosen for the World Tour enjoyed by an audience of more than 390,000 annually. The Banff Mountain Film Festival’s high adrenaline sibling, Radical Reels, also enjoys a widespread, younger audience of more than 32,000.

About the Origins of the Festival

The Festival didn’t always enjoy international recognition. The Festival began more than 39 years ago in 1976 in the small Rocky Mountain town of Banff, Alberta. A tight-knit group of climbers and outdoor folk looked for an annual event to entertain them during the shoulder season between climbing and skiing. As the story goes, several late night meetings and a few beers later The Banff Festival of Mountaineering Films was born. What began as a one-day festival of climbing films, has now blossomed into a nine-day event in Banff and a year-round film tour which encompasses about 840 screenings on all continents (yes, we go to Antarctica!). Past Festival speakers have included climbing leaders and explorers such as Doug Scott, Reinhold Messner, Sir Edmund Hillary, Catherine Destivelle, Lynn Hill, Bradford Washburn, Göran Kropp, Greg Child, and many, many others.

For the past few years the Himalayan Club has been screening this event in Mumbai. This year, The Himalayan Club has carried it further by spreading the event to more than 10 cities/towns in India… Surat, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Vadodara, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mussoorie, Leh, Nasik and Ratnagiri.

We at The Himalayan Club believe that mountaineering is a way of life, and a sport, that brings out the true spirit and inherent mental, physical and moral strength in man. With the idea of spreading the awareness of mountaineering and adventure to old and young alike through exciting films and many seminars, we have taken the sole rights of screening these chosen award winning films to as many cities and towns in India as possible.
