#Trekkers_journey invites you to Spiritual journey of Trimbakeshwar temple of lord Shiva (One of 12 Jyotirling) with trek to TrimbakGad/Bramhagiri & Bhandardurg fort, also visit to Origin of Godavari river on 23rd Oct 2016 (starts on 22nd Oct ni8).
Details about places:
Trimbakeshwar Temple :
Trimbakeshwar is one of the 12 jyotirlingas (and the eighth one in the series) of Lord Shiva and this one is considered to be the main jyotirlinga. Monday is a sacred day here and Shivratri the holy day of Shiva Puja in a year is celebrated here.
The Goddess in this temple is called Trimbakeshwari. This temple was constructed by Raju Balaji Baji Rao who ruled Maharashtra. Later, so many Maratha kings contributed in several ways to improve the temple. Very nearer to the temple, Papaharini Theertam is located. People take bath here before visiting the temple which is considered as a holy bath. This place is formed by river Godavari after falling from Brahmagiri.
TrimbakGad Fort :
Trimbak fort played a part in the history. Ramchandra of Yadavas of Devgiri built it. In 1629, Mughal Emperor Shahjahan sent an army and after long battles in the areas captured it in 1636.
It remained with them till 1720 when it passed to Nijam who ruled it till 1752. The Marathas captured it then and Col. McDowell led the final attack against it in 1818 on 24th April. After a three hours firing the fort surrendered. The British conquered Trimbak and dismantled the fort.
Bramhagiri Parvat :
The first peak of Sahyadri is called Brahmadri. The story associated with this is that lord Shankar was pleased with Brahmadev and said “I shall be known by your name”. Hence it is called as Brahmagiri. The mountain is 1800 feet high. Its height from sea level is 4248 feet. Five peaks of this mountain are called Sadyo-Jata, Vamdev, Aghora, Ishana and Tat-Purusha and are considered as five mouths of the Lord Shiva and they are worshipped.
According to legend, Gautam Rishi performed 'Tapasya' - a rigorous ritual of prayer and penance to Lord Shiva on the Bramhagiri Hill which rises high above the temple. Pleased with his devotion Lord Shiva blessed him and allowed him to bring the sacred rivers Gautami (Ganga) and Godavari from the heavens down to earth.
Bhandardurg Fort :
It resembles to be a watchtower, might be to pass signals or for storage purpose (As the name suggests). But what makes us to take a note of this tower is its strategic importance. It is located near Basgad and Harihar which are the fort in Trimbak range.
The Godavari is the second longest river in India after the river Ganges having its source at Tryambakeshwar, Maharashtra. It starts in Maharashtra and flows east for 1,465 kilometres (910 mi) emptying into Bay of Bengal draining the Indian states Maharashtra –Telangana-Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh-Madhya Pradesh -Odisha -and Karnataka through its extensive network of tributaries. Measuring up to 312,812 km2 (120,777 sq mi), it forms one of the largest river basins in the Indian subcontinent, with only the Ganges and Indus rivers having a drainage basin larger than it in India.
In terms of length, catchment area and discharge, the Godavari river is the largest in peninsular India and had been dubbed as the 'Dakshina Ganga' - the South Ganges river.
