Karnala is a quaint fort overlooking a sprawling bird sanctuary. Situated along the Mumbai-Goa highway, it is at a distance of about 10 km from the city of Panvel. It is an absolute beginner’s trek amidst the natural flora and fauna of the enclosed sanctuary. The relative ease of this trail also provides an excellent opportunity for parents to introduce their children to trekking and nature. The trek begins at the entrance of the bird sanctuary on a well-defined road and winds through the forest. Eventually, it leads to an uphill track under thick vegetation. There are multiple routes inside the sanctuary that lead to the main trail up to the mountain and offer a variety of fauna, both in enclosure and in the wilderness. The trek to the top is a little challenging but thoroughly enjoyable and the fort provides a comfortable perch to rest and have lunch. After a final walk up to the bastion, one is presented with a splendid 360 degree view of the surrounding Raigad district. A 125 ft high basalt pillar sticks out like a thumb at the centre of the peak. It is clearly visible from far away on all the sides.

History and Folklore:
Karnala was the capital of the north Konkan districts under the rule of the DevagiriYadavs and the Tughluqs. Subsequently, in the 16th century, the fort came under the command of the Portuguese. It was retaken by Shivaji in 1670. Later, it was captured by various empires like the Mughals, the Peshwas and finally, by the British East India Company in 1818.
The fort was famous for its strategic position, overlooking the Bor Pass that connected the Konkan coast to the interiors of Maharashtra. It formed the main trade route. The fort was predominantly used as a watchtower as it provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. There is a tall basalt pillar in the center called Pandu’s Tower. The fort is now a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary.
The Karnala fort itself is clearly visible from far away on the Mumbai-Goa highway, NH-17. The entrance to the sanctuary lies on a sharp left turn on the highway, approaching from Panvel. After a short walk inside, one comes across a park-map illustrating detailed routes through the sanctuary

07:00 AM: Meet at Panvel Railway Station.
08:15 AM: Ahead to Fort by public/Pvt. Transport. After breakfast at Panvel
09:00 AM: Introduction and Start ascending.
11:30 AM: Will reach on top, Explore Fort, Lunch Rest Etc.
04:00 PM: Start Descending 
05:30 PM: Will reach base and have Evening refreshment (Tea/Coffee)
06:10 PM: Will start our return journey to Panvel by public/Pvt. Transport
07:00 PM: Will Reach Panvel Station Trek concludes with happy memories

Less than 1 days prior: No refund
Less than 2 days prior: 50% of the total event costs would be deducted. 
Less than 5 days prior: 25% of the total event costs would be deducted.
