Description

Dear Trekkers,

Get ready to explore one of the most popular trekking destination in Sahyadri…“Trek to Rajmachi” on 1st July 2012 in the Lonavla region.

Rajmachi Fort is situated in Lonavla region, on the top of the Western Ghats. Rajmachi can be reached by 2 ways, the tough route from Kondivade village near Karjat (which we will be taking) and the other easy but long way route from Lonavala. The highway from Khopoli to Khandala-Lonavla, known as Borghat, is an ancient trade route. Overseas trade of the Western India and the Deccan was carried through the ports of Chaul, Revdanda, etc., on the western coast. The trade route passing through the Borghat connected these ports to the region around Pune and beyond on the Deccan plateau. Fort Rajmachi was built to control the trade route of Borghat. It offers an amazing view of the Sahyadri and the backwaters of Shirota Dam.

Rajmachi Fort stands on Shrivardhan and Manaranjan peaks. In fact, both the peaks can be said to house two separate forts. One can come across a small plateau between the peaks. The plateau connects the Manranjan and Shrivardhan peaks. Temple of Bhairoba or Kal Bhairava temple is situated in the col between Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. The fort posited on the Shrivardhan peak is known as 'Bale killa'. It has an average altitude of about 3000 feet. The fort was built to monitor the activities in the Konkan area. Moreover, the fort at Manaranjan peak is situated at a height of about 2700 feet and consists of 3 doors, numerous water tanks and strong walls. Manaranjana is the perfect place for sightseeing in Khandala. Tourists can view Dukes Nose, Karanala, Mahuli, Bhimashankar, Matheran and Ulhas river from this site. The old caves of Kondhavi and Tungrali Lake add to the thrill of sightseeing at Rajmachi.
