Bhigwan is a small dusty town on the border of Pune and Solapur district in Central Maharashtra, in India. South of Bhigwan town, exists a widespread backwater formed due to a man made dam built on the Bhima river. The dam is called as Ujani dam. The backwater and Wetland of Ujani Dam in Pune, Maharashtra makes Bhigwan an ideal bird destination. Providing them with lots of food and cool temperature.
There are two areas where one can see the migratory water birds.
2) Dalaj – Kumbharwadi area
The semi-waste water in this Ujani dam backwater area has built very good wetland based ecosystem and helped agriculture also. The rainfall in Pune region decides the water level in Ujani dam. January to March is the best season to visit Bhigwan as by that time most of the migratory birds arrive and settle down.
This place is a paradise to almost 50 migratory birds including Greater Flamingoes, Bar Headed Goose, Painted Storks, Grey Herons, Black-headed Ibis, Night Heron, Little Cormorants, Raptors and may more.
