History of Raigad Fort
Raigad is a hill fort situated near village Mahad, district Raigad. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made the fort his capital in 1674.
The height of the fort above sea level is approximately 2900 feet and is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. There are approximately 1500 steps leading to the fort,
Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after winning the battle with Chandrarrao More, the ruler of valley of Javli (जावली चे खोरे) had seized the plateau of Rairi in 1656.
Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj renovated and expanded the Fortress of Rairi and renamed it as “Raigad” (the King's Fort), the name he gave it when he selected and moved his capital of Swarajya from Rajgad to Raigad.
Shiv Rajyabhishek (crowning ceremony of Chatrapati Shivaji) is an important event witnessed by this fort in the History of Hindavi Swarajya on 06 June 1674. On 3rd April 1680, The Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj breathed his last on this fort.
In 1818 the fort was bombarded and destroyed by East India Company, using cannons.
