Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after winning the battle with Chandrarrao More, the ruler of valley of Javli (जावली चे खोरे) had seized the plateau of Rairi in 1656.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj renovated and expanded the Fortress of Rairi and renamed it as “Raigad” (the King's Fort), the name he gave it when he selected and moved his capital of Swarajya from Rajgad to Raigad.
